An Introduction to the Olde English Tile Range

olde_english_pic_3.jpgThe Tiles

All tiles in the current Olde English range are 9 - 10mm thick.

All triangles, and squares 70mm and below, have completely square edges. Squares and octagons of 100mm and 150mm, and hexagons, have a rebated edge, which gives a flush finish once grouted.

We recommend sealing these tiles when laid indoors with HG Golvpolish or equivalent, non-permanent sealer.  Be sure that the tiling has dried out completely before sealing and that no moisture is trapped under the seal.  If moisture is trapped, it will produce a cloudy finish beneath the seal coat – this can only be rectified by stripping the sealer (with HG Remover) and re-sealing.  Cleaning should be carried out using HG Superfloor.  If a sealer of a different make is used, follow the manufacturer’s guidance for cleaning and stripping products.  Manufacturers instructions should always be followed, with special attention paid to Health and Safety issues.

Exterior tiling should not be sealed, as this can compromise the frost resistance.

Suitable bases for laying

Preferred base is solid concrete with levelling screed.

Tiles can be laid on suspended timber floors provided all timbers are wellfixed and overlaid with plywood at least 6mm thick. This should be screwed down at 100mm centres. All joins must be adequately supported, adding noggins if necessary.

Adhesives

Cement based floor tile adhesives should be used. If laying on plywood, the adhesive manufacturers instructions regarding primers and enhancers should be followed.

Grout with a cement based grout , grey is recommended.

Borders

Please note that the prices shown for borders allow for a 25mm rectangle to either side. It sometimes happens that a wider outer rectangle is required for a better set out or too accommodate “out of square” walls and the like. In such cases the outer rectangle should be cut in on site by the tiler from a 150mm square - an additional amount should be charged for the squares.

Regular and rectangular areas of geometric tiling normally have the border running all round, but traditionally, hall floors in Victorian and Edwardian houses (and some later) do not have the border running around the front and side of the staircase – as though the floor was tiled and the staircase put on top!.

Remember that you can change the colours in any of the designs to reflect your own decorative themes, and even create your own designs from the full range of available tiles

Colour Shading

As with all natural clay products, some variation in shade may occur. If the floor is to be in a single colour (e.g. plain Quarry tiles) The tiler should take the normal precaution of mixing tiles of the same colour from different boxes, to distribute shading differences evenly across the floor.
